Special needs dentistry, also known as special care dentistry, is a branch of dentistry focused on providing oral healthcare to individuals with physical, developmental, cognitive, medical, or mental health conditions. These conditions can make routine dental care challenging or impossible without specialised knowledge and techniques.
This field requires dentists to have additional training and a deeper understanding of the unique needs of their patients. They must be skilled in adapting treatment methods, managing behavioural challenges, and coordinating care with other healthcare professionals and caregivers. Special needs dentists often utilize modified equipment, sedation techniques, and a patient-centered approach to ensure comfortable and effective treatment.
The goal of special needs dentistry is to improve the oral health and overall well-being of individuals who often face significant barriers to accessing quality dental care. By providing tailored and compassionate care, these dentists play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for a diverse and often vulnerable patient population.
I spent over 16 years working in Special Needs Dentistry and became a Senior Dental Officer for East Sussex NHS Trust.Â
